The (not so) secret Life of Plants

Redroot pigweed's pink roots.

Are you interested what’s growing in Grandpa’s Pasture Garden?

No, the secret life of plants is not just about what’s hidden underground…. The focus of this blog is on the life cycles of ALL the “plants” growing in the garden — fruits, berries, veggies, fungi, and even the weeds, from seeds and seedlings to mature plants and produce.

The pink-red roots you see are from Redroot Pigweed, a type of amaranth that at the moment is helping protect the soil and turn the field green until I can configure permanent beds and start planting and transplanting. Yes, redroot pigweed is a weed, but it’s also edible. (Edible, but not my favorite green — yet.) And because it’s better to have weeds than to have bare ground, for the moment I’m letting the seedlings live, even though I’ve pulled up the mature ones.

You’ll hear more about Redroot Pigweed later….

About Me

As I waited decades for the right time to start market gardening, I didn’t sit around doing nothing. Between battling the weeds in my own garden and growing berries and veggies on a very small scale, I read and watched everything I could get my hands on about gardening — the crops that can be grown in my climate, composting, weeds, pests, permaculture, market gardening, beekeeping, raising chickens and more. I wanted to catch the weeds before they got ahead of my veggies, so I learned to recognize them at all stages. To this point I haven’t found many resources that record all the life stages for the plants that grow in my garden, so this blog is for me as much as it is for you. Here’s hoping you enjoy my posts and find them helpful, too! —The Midnight Gardener

Since this website is in its infancy, you won’t find me on these other platforms, yet. I’ll let you know once Grandpa’s Pasture Garden has a presence — and then we can hang out there!
